Managed vs. unmanaged servers – which is right for me?
Published on 10 June 2026
Anyone renting a vServer faces an early question: manage it yourself or have it managed? Both are valid paths – they mainly differ in who is responsible for operations and maintenance.
Unmanaged: full control, full responsibility
With an unmanaged server you get hardware, network and root access – the rest is up to you: keeping the OS up to date, configuring services, setting up backups and monitoring, and reacting to incidents. Ideal if you have an ops team or the know-how and want maximum freedom.
Managed: you build, we operate
With managed hosting we take over operations: OS patching, 24/7 monitoring, automated backups and incident response within an SLA. You focus on your product, we make sure the foundation runs. Especially worthwhile for SMBs and agencies without their own ops team.
How to decide?
- Time & know-how available? → unmanaged gives you the most flexibility.
- Prefer to hand over operations with an SLA? → managed takes maintenance off your plate.
- Undecided? Start unmanaged – managed can be added anytime.
