Server migration: process, costs & checklist
Published on 22 June 2026
A server move sounds like a lot of work – but with the right planning it’s manageable and usually possible with minimal downtime. Here’s how a server migration works.
The typical process
- Inventory: which services, data, domains and dependencies are currently running?
- Set up the target: the new server is prepared, software installed and configured.
- Test run: data is mirrored and the new environment tested – without going live yet.
- Cutover: switch DNS/traffic to the new server, ideally during a maintenance window.
- Follow-up: monitoring, fine-tuning, and only decommission the old environment after confirmation.
Minimizing downtime
With a prepared target environment, low DNS TTLs ahead of the move and a final delta sync, downtime can usually be reduced to a few minutes – often without any noticeable interruption.
What does a migration cost?
It depends on scope and complexity. We offer migrations at a fixed price or by effort from €80/hour – after a short assessment you’ll know exactly where you stand.
Quick checklist
- Verify backups before the move
- Lower DNS TTL in good time
- Carry over SSL certificates & mail configuration
- Document cron jobs, firewall rules and access credentials
We handle the move end-to-end if you like – see add-on services or request a free migration consultation.
